Reading Phoenix Choir made its first visit to Boxgrove Priory on Saturday 4th July. The concert was part of the 2026 Festival of Chichester.

The theme of the concert was the choral polyphony that grew within Europe centuries ago and which has now influenced choral music, not just across modern Europe, but in the American continent as well. The timescale for the pieces in the concert stretched from the 16th century through to the modern day.

The concert opened with Clemens non Papa's Ego Flos Campi sung around the 'Labyrinth' at the west end of the church. Audience members particularly mentioned how much they enjoyed John Tavener's Song for Athene, Avo Pärt's Tribiute to Ceasar and Blake Morgan's wonderful arrangement of Dougie MacLean's Caledonia.

Showing that influences go both ways, the inclusion of Anders Enderoth's Chili con Carne showed the flavour of Mexico coming across to Europe.
