Our 57th season started in a truly colourful style with the third of our Vibrant Voices event at St Laurence Church, Reading. Phoenix now has a tradition of hosting a free family concert in aid of local charities (Food Bank & Launchpad previously) at the beginning of each season.

The afternoon started with refreshments followed by an hour’s concert of a range of music from the 16th century to other present day. Relaxation, a quiz, singing and cake were the order of the day as well as the opportunity to donate to this year’s charity ABC to read.

Norman Morris, Director of Education at Bulmershe College of Higher Education, a teacher training college in Woodley, started the choir in September 1969 and there is still a strong educational link. Many members are teachers including Chris our musical director. It therefore seemed appropriate to support this particular charity which helps Berkshire Primary Schools by providing trained volunteers to aid children who find reading a challenge.

We raised over £275 for ABC to read at the concert. Thank you to all those who donated. If you would like to kindly donate, please visit Support ABC to read

If you are a local charity and would like us to put on a similar event at the start of our next Season then please contact us.
